The Senate is preparing to consider a $72 billion budget package to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Security. Democrats plan to force politically sensitive votes on contentious spending priorities, including a proposed White House ballroom renovation and a $1.8 billion "anti-weaponization" fund. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Democrats will employ an extended amendment voting procedure to challenge Republican support for these measures. The spending measure faces a June 1 deadline set by President Donald Trump. Republicans are advancing the DHS funding bill, while Democrats have resisted appropriations for both subagencies following two civilian deaths during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis in January. Congressional time remains limited with both chambers scheduled for recess beginning Friday.
