South Korea's government declared a test voyage through the Northern Sea Route a success, even as domestic carriers remain skeptical of the route's commercial prospects. The 2,758 teu Panstar Acro completed a 40-day round trip to Felixstowe and Rotterdam, transiting the Arctic in 20 days versus nearly a month via the Suez Canal. However, the vessel carried just 837 teu of cargo, falling short of load targets. President Lee Jae-myung reaffirmed plans to establish regular container service from Busan to Europe via the NSR by 2030. South Korean shipping executives cautioned that the route remains viable only August through November and questioned its viability once Middle East tensions ease. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to analyse voyage details to determine how Arctic shipping could become more commercially viable. The government views Arctic shipping as central to developing Busan as a regional economic hub.
