San Francisco International Airport is investing more than $300 million to construct a new air cargo facility featuring advanced automation technology from Lödige Industries. The 310,000 square-foot, two-story terminal will leverage three Elevating Transfer Vehicles operating on rail-guided systems to handle Unit Load Devices. These vehicles move cargo with simultaneous vertical and horizontal movement. The automated equipment is designed to accelerate cargo processing, reduce turnaround times, and boost operational throughput across the airport. The facility is scheduled for completion in Spring 2028, with operations expected by late 2028. It aims to strengthen SFO's position serving airlines, freight forwarders, and logistics partners while addressing rising cargo demand driven by e-commerce growth and international trade expansion. Lödige Industries is simultaneously developing similar facilities at New York JFK and Toronto Pearson airports, cementing its role in North American air cargo modernization.
