Singapore's position as a global transhipment hub faces new challenges from rivals upgrading operations. Senior officials warned this week that the port authority cannot rely on historical advantages. Competitors investing heavily in automation and digitalization risk winning away business, they cautioned. Chinese ports like Shanghai and Ningbo-Zhoushan benefit from substantial domestic cargo volumes, giving them structural advantages. Singapore relies heavily on transhipment traffic and its appeal to global shipping lines. The competitive threat intensifies as the city-state consolidates container operations from four terminals into the new Tuas facility. The consolidated port will target 65 million teu of annual capacity by the 2040s, with technology central to boosting throughput given land constraints. Maintaining competitiveness requires continuous operational improvements and sustained infrastructure investment.
