California Western Railroad unveiled Locomotive 1776 this month, a heritage engine bearing American flag and bald eagle imagery to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary. The locomotive, operated by Mendocino Railway and owned by Sierra Northern Railway, will lead most departures from Fort Bragg, including the Pudding Creek Express, Presidential Class service aboard the Redwood, and Glen Blair Bar excursions. The design draws inspiration from the 1948 Freedom Train and other historic patriotic railway efforts. "Railroads have always played an important role in the American story," said Robert Jason Pinoli, president and CEO of Mendocino Railway. General Manager Efstathios Pappas noted the locomotive aims to inspire pride while honoring historical traditions and looking forward. Sierra Northern Railway earned honorable mention recognition as a 2026 Short Line of the Year.
