Starbucks has discontinued its computer vision-based inventory management system about nine months after launching the technology, returning to manual stock-counting methods across its store network.
The coffee chain introduced the system in September to streamline inventory tracking and reduce stockouts. However, the tool proved problematic in practice, occasionally miscounting or mislabeling items, prompting the company to reverse course.
"We have moved to a single, consistent process across all inventory counts," Starbucks said in a statement. "This approach supports accuracy and product availability in our coffeehouses."
Store employees welcomed the decision. Internal comments obtained by the company praised the shift away from what workers characterized as unreliable technology, with one employee noting gratitude that management "trusted the partners over unreliable spatial recognition."
Starbucks said it remains committed to investing in technology selectively, focusing on solutions that demonstrably improve operations rather than automation for its own sake.
