The Surface Transportation Board approved construction and operation of a new rail line by Laredo Gateway Industrial Railway on June 17. The approximately 2-mile line extends from Union Pacific's main line between San Antonio and Laredo to Gateway Industrial Park north of the city. Kraus Development established LGIR as a non-carrier subsidiary, and Iron Horse Resources will operate the line. The STB found the project would increase competition and create a new rail service option currently unavailable in the region. According to the board, the project will divert traffic to rail, boosting energy efficiency and reducing emissions. Environmental mitigation conditions apply to protect biological and cultural resources. LGIR projects daily train service with 4,000-6,750 railcars annually once operations commence. Iron Horse Resources will separately seek board authority to operate the line.
