Container shipping rates climbed this week as U.S. import demand and reduced carrier capacity supported pricing across major trade lanes. Drewry's World Container Index gained 2% to $4,585 per 40-foot container. The Shanghai-to-Los Angeles route rose 2% to $8,007, while Shanghai-to-New York increased 1% to $10,166. Carriers plan just two blank sailings on the trans-Pacific next week, down from six this week, suggesting rates should stabilize despite added capacity entering the market. Asia-Europe routes strengthened more sharply, with Shanghai-to-Rotterdam climbing 3% to $3,632 and Shanghai-to-Genoa jumping 5% to $4,152. Carriers scheduled eight blank sailings on Asia-Europe for next week, compared to two previously, tightening supply to support higher freight costs. Port congestion relief at Shanghai—where vessel waiting times dropped from 97 hours to 38 hours in recent weeks—has eased some operational pressures.
