Sucro Can Canada has begun operations at its newly completed C$135 million sugar refinery at Pier 15 of the Port of Hamilton in Ontario. The facility, designed to eventually become Canada's largest sugar refinery, will produce dry and liquid refined sugar for food manufacturers across Ontario, Quebec, and the U.S. Midwest. The refinery has planned annual capacity of up to 1 million metric tons and will receive approximately 10 vessels during its first operational year, scaling to 14 vessels by 2027. Construction began in 2024 and wrapped up last month. The facility currently employs 65 workers with plans for additional hiring as processing systems expand. Sucro Can first entered the port in 2014 with operations at Pier 10. The Port of Hamilton is served by CN and Canadian Pacific Kansas City and supported by the Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority.
