Supply Chain Sector Cuts Over 1,200 Jobs Amid Network Consolidation

Major carriers and warehouse operators shed more than 1,200 positions during a two-week period in mid-July as they restructured operations. Amazon led reductions with 494 layoffs tied to a temporary closure of its 1 million-square-foot Port St. Lucie, Florida fulfillment center undergoing a $200 million renovation. The facility is slated to reopen in late 2028. Temco Logistics eliminated 223 positions across Georgia, Texas and Florida after discontinuing flatbed delivery operations nationwide. Freight Handlers Inc. cut 168 permanent jobs at five Publix distribution centers in Florida following the loss of a third-party unloading contract. Additional facility closures and workforce reductions occurred at GEODIS, CJ Logistics America, GXO Logistics, Niagara Bottling and International Paper. The reductions coincided with 10 transportation and distribution companies seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection during the same period.
