Chinese President Xi Jinping's diplomatic encounters this week with U.S. and Russian leaders diverged sharply in substance and tone. During President Trump's state visit to Beijing, Taiwan emerged as a central and contentious issue. Xi described it as the most important matter in U.S.-China relations, with the island's disputed status dominating discussions between the two superpowers. By contrast, the same territorial question was notably absent from Xi's separate talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where the two leaders instead reaffirmed existing strategic ties in a more relaxed setting. Political analysts attribute the omission to Beijing's reluctance to equate Taiwan's status with Russia's territorial claims in Ukraine, which could amplify perceptions of Chinese assertiveness. China has consistently refused to recognize Taiwan's independence while previously acknowledging Ukrainian sovereignty.
