The Teamsters union has launched a formal challenge to United Parcel Service, alleging the carrier violated its 2023 collective bargaining agreement by outsourcing delivery operations to nonunion subcontractors. The union, which represents approximately 330,000 UPS workers including 100,000 drivers, unanimously passed a resolution this week directing leadership to pursue the matter aggressively. At issue is UPS's expanded use of Roadie, a gig-based delivery platform, which the union contends diverts work exclusively reserved for Teamster members. The carrier has scaled Roadie's operations nationwide, establishing dozens of distribution facilities. According to Roadie's website and parcel industry professionals, Roadie handles same-day and urgent shipments alongside oversized items that bypass standard parcel networks, serving retail partners including Walmart and Tractor Supply. The union has established a national Roadie Committee to document alleged contract violations and map facilities ahead of enforcement action.
