Tesla formally opened its dedicated Semi manufacturing facility in Sparks, Nevada on September 24, a 1.7 million square foot plant adjacent to Gigafactory Nevada. The company designated the day as the launch of high-volume production, though the first truck rolled off the line in April. The facility is designed for 50,000 trucks annually. Early deliveries went to DHL, PepsiCo and US Foods. The Semi program traces its origins to 2014, when Tesla identified a contradiction: the company was shipping battery and powertrain components from Nevada to California on diesel trucks. Design work began in early 2016, with two alpha vehicles debuted publicly in 2017. The production model incorporates fleet data and customer feedback, retaining design elements like center seating and dual-screen cockpit from the original prototypes. Regenerative braking significantly reduces wear on mechanical systems, lowering operational costs. Tesla acknowledged it is not yet a heavy truck company.
