Tesla has registered just 42 autonomous vehicles for driverless ridehailing operations in Texas, regulatory filings revealed Thursday. The fleet size pales in comparison to Waymo's 577 authorized robotaxis in the state. Texas implemented new oversight rules for commercial autonomous vehicle operators, requiring companies to self-certify that their fleets meet Level 4 autonomy standards established by SAE. Level 4 vehicles can operate without human drivers in normal weather and typical road conditions. Waymo has long designated its robotaxis as Level 4 capable. Tesla, which launched its Robotaxi service in Texas last June, has previously disclosed that most of its vehicles feature Level 2 driver assistance systems. The company declined immediate comment on how it self-certified any vehicles to Level 4 status. Tesla is banking on autonomous capabilities to drive future growth amid intensifying EV market competition.
