Law enforcement agencies across Texas, Arizona and California are ramping up commercial vehicle inspections to combat unsafe equipment, unqualified drivers and fatigue-related crashes. In North Texas, a joint operation by the Wichita County Sheriff's Office, Texas Department of Public Safety and Electra Police Department resulted in 132 traffic stops and 93 commercial vehicle inspections. Authorities issued 109 equipment citations, impounded 16 vehicles and detained 24 individuals found unlawfully present. In Arizona, state troopers sidelined a driver on June 23 in Mesa for operating without a valid commercial driver's license, required medical certificate or USDOT number. The trailer also had an inoperative breakaway device. California Highway Patrol's Border Division Commercial Vehicle Unit intensified operations in El Centro following reports of increased crashes and hours-of-service violations.
