Declining agricultural equipment sales are creating headwinds for flatbed carriers. U.S. and Canadian tractor sales fell 11 percent in April 2026 compared to the prior year, signaling softness in the ag equipment market. Canadian combine sales surged 42.7 percent, offering limited relief. Large tractors and combines move almost exclusively on flatbed trailers, so tractor shipment declines translate directly to fewer loads on agricultural equipment corridors originating from the Midwest manufacturing belt. Dealers remain hesitant to place major restock orders until farmers gain confidence in capital equipment purchases, contingent on long-term farm bill passage. While flatbed spot rates have outperformed dry van this year due to construction and industrial demand, the agricultural equipment segment—historically a significant volume contributor—remains a weakness rather than growth driver for the sector.
