A sharp drop in Canadian visitors to South Florida this year has strained hospitality businesses catering to the seasonal influx from the north. Richard Clavet, owner of several Canadian-themed hotels along South Federal Highway in Hollywood, Florida, experienced a wave of cancellations tied to trade tensions between the United States and Canada that intensified last year. The dispute prompted some guests to cancel despite forfeiting deposits rather than travel south. Beyond trade friction, a weakening Canadian dollar and new border screening requirements compounded the slowdown. Clavet responded by hosting complimentary social events and aggressive social media campaigns showcasing guest experiences. The strategy proved effective, with bookings rebounding substantially by fall 2026. The U.S. remains Canada's top travel destination historically. However, recent trade tensions have visibly impacted this traditionally robust market segment.
