Trans-Pacific container rates are showing sustained strength as peak season extends longer than anticipated. West Coast prices fell 1% to $6,129 per FEU on the latest Baltic Index reading, while East Coast rates held steady at $9,012 per FEU. After an early May-through-July surge driven by tariff-related frontloading, rates had eased considerably through late July. However, West Coast pricing jumped above $7,000 per FEU on August 1 general rate increases, signaling renewed strength. East Coast rates have remained stable near $9,000 per FEU since early July. Analysts attribute the momentum to lower-than-expected inventory levels and stronger consumer demand. The July 24 expiration of Section 122 tariffs, immediately replaced by Section 301 duties at comparable 10-12.5% levels, may have also tempered shipper concerns about future duty escalation.
