Container shipping rates on Asia-U.S. West Coast routes jumped 51% in a single week to $4,836 per forty-foot equivalent unit. East Coast prices climbed 25% to $6,336 per FEU, marking the sharpest weekly increase since tariff-driven demand spikes last year. The early peak season surge reflects multiple pressures: shippers accelerating cargo ahead of new trade measures targeting 60 countries over forced labor concerns, anticipated fuel surcharge increases of 80% beginning in July, and elevated oil prices from Middle East tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz. Trade policy analysts warn the tariff announcements will accelerate global supply chain realignment. The National Retail Federation shifted its peak season forecast to June from July, projecting import volumes 5% higher than May but cooling through autumn. Carriers implemented rate increases and surcharges effective June 1, with indications of additional hikes to follow. Asian manufacturers are reportedly raising prices due to higher input costs.
