Container spot rates on transpacific routes showed signs of stabilization this week as carriers prepared for China's Golden Week holiday beginning October 1st. The Shanghai-New York rate held at $10,373 per 40ft on the Drewry's World Container Index, while Shanghai-Los Angeles ticked up 2% to $7,838 per 40ft. Rates had surged consistently since late August, breaching $10,000 per 40ft to the US east coast. However, shippers face mounting disruptions beyond pricing. Carriers are increasingly rolling confirmed bookings and canceling slots due to vessel space and weight constraints. Port congestion has worsened hinterland distribution. Vessels arrive unpredictably—sometimes three to four days early, other times several days late. This volatility disrupts terminal operations and booking processes. Industry observers expect rates may climb further before the holiday as carriers prioritize premium shipments.
