Major ocean carriers successfully implemented price increases that drove transpacific container rates sharply higher amid persistent port disruptions in China. Shanghai-US West Coast rates jumped 12% to $6,229 per 40-foot container, while Shanghai-US East Coast routes reached $9,054 per 40-foot as of Friday, according to the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index. Typhoons Bavi and Noul in late July created severe congestion at ports around the Yangtze and Pearl River deltas, triggering widespread equipment and slot shortages. Real-time market data shows rates climbing even higher, with West Coast routes reaching $7,000 per 40-foot and East Coast services hitting $9,500 per 40-foot. Strong cargo demand from Asia combined with constrained capacity at central and southern China ports has given carriers confidence to revise third-quarter earnings forecasts upward. Transpacific volumes remain firm entering August despite recent softening on Asia-Europe routes.
