The transportation collections industry has transformed into a specialized field requiring expertise in freight law, documentation and risk management. It now extends far beyond traditional invoice recovery efforts. Broker insolvencies, fraud schemes and double-brokering incidents have complicated payment disputes that typically involve multiple stakeholders—carriers, brokers, shippers, receivers, factoring companies and insurance providers. Collections specialists now function as investigators and mediators, tasked with tracing complex freight transactions to determine liability across interconnected parties. The extended freight downturn has intensified financial stress on carriers and brokers while increasing fraud activity industrywide. Modern collections work increasingly involves reputation management, dispute resolution on carrier-tracking platforms and compliance assistance. Jennifer Chrestman, founder of Freight Recovery Specialists, notes the industry underestimates this complexity. Not all cases conclude with payment recovery, particularly when debtors face potential double-liability exposure from previous transactions.
