The truckload market is entering the peak season with minimal capacity relief despite a notable decline in accepted loads. The Accepted SONAR Truckload Volume Index fell more than 4% over four weeks to 9,518, marking its lowest level outside holiday periods since January. However, the national rejection rate has remained flat near 13%, compared to under 6% a year ago when the market entered peak season. Accepted volumes were roughly 2% higher last year, signaling minimal efficiency gains. The current tightness stems from supply constraints rather than demand surges, distinguishing it from pandemic-era cycles driven by demand spikes. Despite eleven months of elevated rates, volumes have barely improved. Winter Storm Fern in late January exacerbated capacity pressures, with rejections and spot rates failing to retreat meaningfully since. Barriers to entry including language proficiency requirements, stricter CDL regulations, and immigration policies are limiting driver availability.
