Truckload linehaul rates excluding fuel and accessorials climbed 10.1% in September compared to the same month last year, extending a streak of consecutive annual increases to 21 months, according to payment data released Tuesday.
Rates rose 6% sequentially from August to reach their highest absolute level in four years. The contract-heavy index also registered a 12.9% gain on a two-year stacked basis.
Freight shipments grew 1.6% year-over-year, marking the second consecutive monthly increase after 42 months of declines.
Carrier executives remain confident heading into bid season, citing ongoing capacity constraints driven by industry attrition. Werner Enterprises projects rate-per-mile increases of 10% to 13% for its one-way fleet. Tender rejection rates remain elevated, indicating a tight market despite seasonal softness in spot pricing.
