The Trump administration on Thursday delayed two EPA regulations governing refrigerant systems. The move projects savings exceeding $2 billion for American businesses and families. The rules, finalized under the prior administration in 2023 and 2024, targeted hydrofluorocarbon emissions and leak prevention across grocery stores, food distribution networks and semiconductor manufacturers. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said the action allows companies to select refrigeration systems suited to their operations while reducing compliance costs. The administration framed the decision as consumer-focused, emphasizing potential grocery price relief. However, the changes impose no requirement on retailers to pass savings to shoppers. One grocer acknowledged being "right in the middle" of passing savings to consumers. The delay affects compliance timelines for regulations addressing potent greenhouse gases widely used in cooling and air conditioning systems.
