President Donald Trump postponed a scheduled signing ceremony Thursday for his administration's executive order on artificial intelligence. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he objected to specific provisions in the draft. He stated he wants to maintain U.S. leadership in AI development and feared the order "could have been a blocker" to that objective. The president emphasized that artificial intelligence is "causing tremendous good" and expressed reluctance to implement policies that might hinder American competitiveness against China and other nations. The delayed order would have required the government to pre-evaluate AI models for security vulnerabilities. Despite the postponement, the Trump administration has generally supported the technology sector's expansion, backing industry efforts to prevent states from establishing their own AI regulations. The federal Center for AI Standards and Innovation recently announced partnerships with Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and Elon Musk's ventures.
