Federal tax returns filed by President Donald Trump, his family members, the Trump Organization, and related trusts and affiliates are protected from Internal Revenue Service enforcement actions under an $1.8 billion settlement with the Justice Department, according to a document posted Tuesday.

The Justice Department agreement bars the federal government from prosecuting or pursuing any claims that could have been made by the IRS regarding tax returns filed before the settlement's effective date. Protection extends to Trump, his family, the Trump Organization, and related entities including trusts, parent companies, affiliates, and subsidiaries.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Trump's former criminal defense lawyer, signed the settlement agreement. The document, first reported by Politico, is an addendum to the settlement conditions initially revealed Monday. The provision has drawn criticism from lawmakers who argue it violates federal law prohibiting executive branch interference in IRS audits.
