Fleets are failing to capitalize on telematics systems despite significant investments in the technology, according to findings released in October 2025. A SambaSafety survey found that 66% of carriers identified data interpretation and response as their primary telematics challenge, ranking it above privacy and accuracy concerns. The disconnect between data collection and actionable insights represents a significant missed opportunity in an industry with tight margins. Device sprawl emerged as the root cause. Most fleets operate multiple telematics platforms simultaneously—cameras, black boxes, ELDs and OEM sensors—each generating data in different formats requiring distinct analytical approaches. The survey indicated that many carriers use multiple telematics systems. Some companies have assembled in-house teams of 500 people or more dedicated to maximizing telematics potential.
