The United States and China have agreed to establish a safety protocol governing artificial intelligence development, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced during President Donald Trump's two-day meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing May 14-15, 2026.
Bessent said the protocol will establish best practices and prevent non-state actors from accessing advanced models. The Treasury Secretary emphasized the U.S. negotiating position stems from its technological leadership in the sector.
"The reason we are able to have wholesome discussions with the Chinese on AI is because we are in the lead," Bessent told CNBC. "I do not think we would be having the same discussions if they were this far ahead of us."
The agreement represents cooperation between the two AI superpowers on governing the rapidly evolving technology.
