The United States and China have agreed to extend their trade agreement through January 10, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Wednesday as Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington for high-level talks.
The extended truce will keep tariff levels stable and ensure continued access to rare earth materials, Bessent said during remarks on Fox News. The original agreement, negotiated during talks in South Korea last October, had been set to expire in November.
Bessent noted Beijing must still meet additional commitments under the extended arrangement. Ahead of this week's summit, many had anticipated the truce would be extended by six months or longer.
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump greeted Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan upon arrival. Bessent previously met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York to discuss setting up an alert system for artificial intelligence incidents.
