The extended peak shipping season for container imports is moderating after running unusually strong through summer and early fall, according to retail industry data. August emerged as 2026's busiest month for U.S. ports, a shift from the traditional September peak. Tracked ports handled 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units in August, with September projected at 2.28 million TEUs, representing an 8.5% year-over-year increase before declining to 2 million TEUs in November. Retailers attribute sustained import demand to robust consumer spending, despite softer economic indicators and rising inflation. The gradual retreat from summer highs represents a shift from previous years' sharp seasonal drops. Most holiday merchandise has already arrived at U.S. ports, with retailers now focusing on last-minute replenishment and inventory preparation for early 2027.
