The United States and Iran have signaled movement toward ending their Middle East conflict, yet remain sharply divided over critical issues including Tehran's uranium enrichment program and proposed tolls on the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Thursday that while "good signs" suggest a peace agreement is within reach, any deal would be "unfeasible" if Iran pursues control over shipping lanes through the strategic waterway.

"No one in the world is in favor of a tolling system," Rubio told reporters in Miami, calling such measures "unacceptable." He indicated the administration would pursue alternative options if negotiations fail.

Iran's Students News Agency reported that Washington's latest proposal has "narrowed the gaps to some extent." Tehran says further progress requires Washington to end the "temptation for war." An uneasy ceasefire persists, with Iran blocking the Strait and the U.S. maintaining port blockades.
