A surge in American demand for mahjong sets is driving production in Taixing, an eastern Chinese manufacturing hub. Workers at Taixing Senju Cultural Entertainment Supplies inspect tiles for defects before shipment. Quality control is critical given retail prices between $300 and $400 per set. Production costs run approximately $30 per set, creating substantial margins for U.S.-based vendors, primarily Amazon sellers. Despite elevated shipping costs from Middle East and European conflicts, clients continue orders without complaint. Wang Hao, workshop co-owner and former Alibaba employee, identified the opportunity after observing search volume for mahjong surge more than 1,000% in the late months of the previous year. He launched a distribution operation targeting American consumers who prefer smaller, more colorful tiles compared to traditional Chinese versions. The tile game originated in China during the late 1800s and has experienced renewed popularity through social media platforms.
