The U.S. Trade Representative announced a proposed 25% tariff on Brazilian imports Monday, citing a Section 301 investigation into the country's trade policies and practices. The USTR determined that certain Brazilian actions, policies and practices are unreasonable and burden U.S. commerce, providing legal authority under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 to pursue the penalty. The agency is accepting public comment and has scheduled a hearing for July 6 to gather input from affected parties. Negotiations between the countries continue under a July 15 statutory deadline. USTR Jamieson Greer noted that discussions with Brazil's leadership have accelerated recently but said substantial differences remain unresolved. The administration plans to continue bilateral talks while the tariff proposal advances through the review process.
