The Department of Transportation announced a $217 million investment Monday aimed at modernizing the trucking and bus sectors while eliminating fraudulent operators. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will distribute grants across four initiatives to strengthen industry oversight. States will receive $52 million to upgrade commercial driver's license networks and ensure compliance with federal standards. Another $56.5 million targets safety programs in high-crash corridors and hazardous materials transport. Technology development receives $105 million to enhance roadside inspections and law enforcement investigations. The initiative allocates an additional $3.5 million for career training for military veterans and civilians entering the trucking profession. According to transportation officials, the initiative seeks to restore integrity to licensing systems and remove bad actors that have destabilized the industry.
