Freight companies pursuing artificial intelligence must focus on core business problems rather than chasing trendy but superficial technology applications, according to Uber Freight's chief technology officer.

Val Marchevsky cautioned logistics executives at the Supply Chain AI Symposium 2026 in Chicago that many AI pilots fail to reach production. They target easy-to-implement use cases with limited long-term value. He cited the collapse of early-stage startups that built thin software layers atop chatbots as a cautionary tale.

Companies achieving sustained success with AI address fundamental industry pain points, Marchevsky said. Large language models perform optimally in predictable, controlled environments, but struggle in less structured scenarios common in freight operations.

The freight sector faces higher failure costs than most industries, requiring stricter guardrails around AI deployment. Marchevsky emphasized the importance of human oversight and understanding technological limitations before implementation.
