Union Pacific reported record grain shipments in the first quarter of 2026, exceeding its previous peak set in 2008, driven by renewed export demand for U.S. feed grain to western ports and Mexico.

The carrier achieved grain shuttle velocity averaging 334 miles per day during the period. The performance follows a 14% increase in domestic corn production last year.

UP attributed the surge to operational improvements and infrastructure investments. New grain hopper cars carry an additional 2,500 pounds while measuring three to seven feet shorter than legacy equipment. This enables more covered hoppers per train within existing track space.

A streamlined crew change procedure at Eagle Pass international crossing accelerated cross-border transit times. Mexican crews now travel seven miles into UP's yard for interchange rather than conducting time-consuming bridge operations.

"Our network is running incredibly fast, allowing us to handle more volume," said Jason Hess, senior vice president of bulk, marketing and sales.
