A United Airlines flight bound for Palma de Mallorca, Spain diverted back to Newark late Saturday after crew members identified a potential security threat onboard.

The aircraft turned around after 4 hours and 24 minutes in the air. United confirmed the diversion was made "to address a potential security concern" but did not initially elaborate.

Passenger reports and air traffic control communications indicated the issue stemmed from a Bluetooth device with a concerning name. Flight attendants instructed passengers to disable their Bluetooth connectivity during the incident.

Air traffic control audio revealed that security personnel discovered a Bluetooth speaker bearing an inappropriate four-letter word designation. The discovery prompted a full aircraft inspection before the flight could resume operations.

The incident underscores heightened security protocols maintained across commercial aviation.
