Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena defended the planned combination with Norfolk Southern on Tuesday, characterizing it as an enhancement of competition. Speaking at an investor event, Vena pushed back against criticism from rival Class I railroads. He asserted the merger would enhance rather than diminish competition if approved. Vena suggested competing railroads should view the transaction as their responsibility to address rather than an impediment to fair market practices. The proposed deal combines two of North America's largest freight railroads and remains under regulatory review. It is targeted for completion by late 2027. The Surface Transportation Board is currently considering the application and has requested supplemental information before rendering a decision.
