Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern's pending merger will strengthen rather than diminish competition in the rail sector, according to company leadership. The combined railroad will provide single-line service across 10,000 lanes and connect 88,000 new county-to-county points, eliminating costly interchanges that slow shipments. Carloads grew 7 percent between 2020 and 2024, contradicting claims the industry faces stagnation. The merger will add seven daily intermodal lanes and six manifest trains, allowing customers to access new markets. Trucks currently handle 43 percent of freight ton-miles; the merged carrier aims to capture additional business by offering faster, more reliable service than competing railroads. Since the merger announcement, rival carriers have announced four new service partnerships in less than one year. This compares to just one announcement in the prior two-year period.
