Transpacific container rates are expected to maintain a pricing advantage over Asia-Europe lanes through the lunar new year, driven by robust American import demand amid weaker European economic conditions. Evergreen's general manager Wu Kuang Hui characterized the market divergence as "strong on US routes, weak on Europe routes." He cited record-high import volumes at major US ports, depleted inventory levels, and resilient consumer spending as reasons for optimism. US imports from the Far East increased 5.1% while European volumes surged 12%, yet pricing pressure in Europe intensified. Shanghai Containerized Freight Index data Friday showed US east and west coast rates holding steady at $10,524 and $7,584 per 40ft container respectively. Shanghai-Europe rates declined 3% to $2,274 per twenty-foot equivalent unit, extending a downward trend since July following earlier April gains.
