Steel shipments into the United States fell sharply through April as Section 232 tariffs reshape domestic supply chains. Monthly imports reached 1.87 million net tons in April, up nearly 6% from March but down substantially from year-ago levels. The year-to-date decline stands at approximately 30%, reflecting the tariff regime's impact on foreign competitors. South Korea, Canada, Brazil, Mexico and Vietnam remained the largest supplier nations during the period. Increased volumes of tin plate, metallic coatings and reinforcing bars comprised the April shipments. Domestic steel production has climbed nearly 5 million tons since early 2025, signaling a shift toward North American manufacturing. The Steel Manufacturers Association characterized the import decline as evidence that policy objectives are materializing as planned.
