The U.S. Postal Service will reshape its parcel pricing structure beginning July 12. The changes introduce dimensional weight calculations for oversized lightweight packages and eliminate ounce-based rates for certain Ground Advantage shipments.
The adjustments expand dimensional reporting requirements and mirror pricing methodologies employed by FedEx and UPS. Industry observers warn unprepared shippers face potential cost increases, though the changes offer mitigation strategies for those who plan ahead.
The overhaul addresses USPS financial pressures while standardizing practices across the industry. However, experts caution the changes carry retention risks. Mark Waverek, managing partner at PlaidMark Management Consulting Services, noted customer defection remains a concern. Some shippers may evaluate alternative carriers in response to the new fee structure.
