Port of Qingdao has deployed a vacuum-based autonomous mooring system that reduces ship berthing to 30 seconds, a significant acceleration from the typical 30-minute process. The installation of 13 vacuum mooring units eliminates the need for workers to manually secure lines, improving safety on the dock. The technology debuted in January at the northern Chinese port, which ranks fifth globally in container traffic. Qingdao moved 32.89 million twenty-foot equivalent units in 2025, representing a 6% increase year-over-year. This marks the first operational deployment of this autonomous mooring approach.
