Volvo Completes 'Lock and Leave' Software Update Rollout Across North America

Volvo Trucks has finished deploying its 'lock and leave' software update system throughout North America. The system enables drivers to initiate installations and depart while updates run during scheduled downtime, eliminating the need for service center visits. Updates can occur during breaks or overnight parking. Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America, noted that convenient software deployment directly supports fleet uptime objectives. The system builds on Volvo's Remote Programming platform, which debuted in 2018 for eligible trucks with factory connectivity hardware. By 2023, the system had completed over 40,000 updates and expanded to six programmable vehicle modules. The 2024 VNL model features enhanced connected services supporting over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics. Recent performance metrics show connected truck adoption jumped from 25% to over 80% within six months, with a corresponding 24% reduction in unplanned stops. Volvo processed more than 7,500 updates in August alone, with capacity to dispatch 20,000 daily.
