Volvo Autonomous Solutions will begin fully driverless operations in the first quarter of 2027, eliminating safety drivers from its commercial fleet in Texas. The company aims to deploy more than 300 autonomous trucks by year-end 2027, with industrial scaling commencing in 2028. Five-year revenue projections for the autonomous business approach $3 billion. Currently operating on three routes between Dallas-Houston, Fort Worth-El Paso, and Dallas-Oklahoma City with safety drivers aboard, Volvo is expanding its Oklahoma City lane to include direct customer facility deliveries rather than hub-to-hub transfers. Aurora Innovation, Volvo's technology partner, confirmed the driverless milestone, stating the trucks will operate "with nobody behind the wheel in Texas" beginning Q1 2027. This expansion eliminates traditional drayage operations and requires deeper customer integration. The economic advantage centers on doubled asset utilization, allowing trucks to operate continuously without human hours-of-service restrictions. Volvo has established an uptime network through dealers across operating lanes to maintain high availability.
