Volvo Trucks North America unveiled the VNX vocational and heavy-haul truck Wednesday. The new model targets a market segment where the manufacturer holds just 2% to 3% market share. The VNX shares electrical architecture with Volvo's VNL long-haul and VNR regional-haul trucks, stemming from a $3 billion investment in product development and manufacturing. Vocational work represents roughly 25% of the North American truck market, compared to 50% for long-haul and 25% for regional-haul operations. Volvo's FMX vocational model commands approximately 30% market share in Europe and Brazil. The VNX introduces Remote Steer technology, allowing operators to control the truck at speeds up to 5 mph from outside the cab for precision backing on job sites. A Terrain Brake system holds the vehicle in place on steep, rocky terrain, preventing forward or backward movement when drivers release the accelerator. The VNX succeeds the VHD, which Volvo has produced since 2000.
