A nationwide survey of 1,594 likely voters shows substantial opposition to additional freight rail regulations, with respondents citing concerns about shipping costs and supply chain disruption. When informed that proposed mandates could increase consumer prices, voters opposed new rules by a 49% to 26% margin. Support for deregulation grew to 50% to 25% when respondents learned that excessive rail mandates could shift freight to trucks, increasing highway congestion and emissions. Voters also backed deregulation by a 46% to 29% margin after learning rail transport moves goods more efficiently than trucking while reducing congestion and emissions. Even when framed around safety, voters favored deregulation 42% to 30%, noting freight rail already operates as the safest land transport method. The poll found that 43% of voters supported decreased regulations after learning rail moves 40% of U.S. long-distance freight and generates over $220 billion in annual economic output.
