Waymo is voluntarily recalling approximately 3,800 autonomous vehicles equipped with its fifth and sixth generation driving systems. The recall addresses software vulnerabilities that could direct them onto flooded roadways. The Alphabet subsidiary identified the deficiency after documented incidents in Austin, Texas and other locations showed vehicles entering submerged streets and stalling during heavy rainfall. The company has implemented interim operational restrictions, limiting robotaxi deployments to areas where flash flooding risks are minimal. Waymo stated it is developing additional software safeguards to prevent future occurrences. The recall marks the latest safety issue for the rapidly expanding autonomous fleet, following previous incidents involving school bus interactions in Austin and gridlock complications during San Francisco power outages in December. The company emphasized that safety remains its core priority as it expands operations across challenging U.S. driving environments.
