Werner Enterprises is broadening its approach to driver recruitment by emphasizing long-term career development over short-term placements. Senior Director of Driver Recruiting Ben Pile, who has spent 23 years in the field, says the carrier distinguishes itself through over 400 different driving opportunities. These opportunities range from regional and local routes to dedicated lanes and team driving. Beyond traditional driving positions, Werner offers drivers pathways into leadership roles mentoring junior drivers, ambassador positions, and Road Team Captain opportunities. The company operates Operation Freedom trucks aimed at military veterans. Pile attributes driver retention challenges across the industry to two primary factors: poor equipment quality and lack of respect in the workplace. Werner maintains a trailer fleet averaging five years old as a baseline standard. The carrier addresses industry-wide skepticism about recruiting promises by holding recruiters to the same performance standards expected of drivers, closing the gap between hiring pledges and operational reality.
